Answering the Call to Create

How to be creative againOne would think answering the call to create is as simple as 1-2-3:

1. Feel the urge.
2. Grab some supplies.
3. Go create.
Right?

Sometimes. But I know all too well it's not always as easy as it sounds. If you're anything like me, you may easily wake up one day with a nine-hour-YouTube-marathon hangover, knee deep in supplies you now feel guilty for buying because you still don’t know what the heck to do with any of it. And even if you did, you know it’ll never turn out the way she did it. Ugh, and let’s not even mention that huge pile of laundry still sitting in the corner and the dirty dishes in the sink. How do those artists make it look so easy??

Let’s face it - that deep yearning inside that’s pulling you feels so bright and promising and invigorating, but it can be confusing and frustrating as hell.

There’s two things that I know for sure:

Yes, You ARE Creative.
And you’re feeling that urge for a reason.

Because here’s the deal: In order to create or express yourself freely and authentically, it needs to come from an authentic place. From within.

Beautiful, you are so much more than you realize. Your Creative Soul is calling you back home.

Life can be harsh. But I want you to know that you always have the most beautiful, knowing, loving guide within you. Your Soul, full of infinite wisdom and creativity, patiently waits for you to come back home and nurture the flames.

So why does it feel so damn hard? And why do we keep getting in our own way?

Because your mind is the one running the show, and it's scared to let go. Our minds are used to being in control and predicting outcomes. For us to truly get present and follow our Soul's whims one step at a time, means to step into the scary unknown. That place of unknowing, of uncertainty, can feel dark and filled with monsters. We hold on for dear life and fight tooth and nail not to be thrown off the edge into that scary place!

When there's a calling to step into that unknown, many people turn to battle. They try to fight away the voices that tell them not to move on, that tell them they can't, or they're not good enough. They start to beat themselves up for beating themselves up. They try to ignore those inner critical voices, or tell them to shut up. When really, those voices are just scared.

The only true way in, is to simply start walking gently past that edge into the unknown while holding compassion for the part of you that's scared sh**less. Our minds need to build trust that when you listen to your Soul, everything will indeed be okay.

Always in curiosity and love,

{Creative} Soul Truths #5

You already have everything you need. Your authentic Soul voice is bright, beautiful, and patently waiting to freely express itself.

Its quiet voice is always speaking to you, through what we call intuition, even if you can’t quite hear it now. We all have intuition… it’s our inner knowing, or what I like to call the language of our Soul. It’s the part of you that speaks the truth about who you are and what you want. So basically, it’s your life road map to living your purpose, and your most fulfilled, joyful life!

If we get present and follow its urges when we sit down to create, we will develop an art journaling practice that can ultimately bring us more confidence, happiness, self-awareness, healing, and a newfound sense of wholeness.

If doing that feels impossible for you right now, then for one reason or another, your mind is trying to protect you from letting your creative spirit free, from letting your intuitive Soul lead the way. (You’re not alone! It’s a totally natural part of being human.) The key then, is to go gently, with compassion, and start to build trust between your mind and your intuitive Soul.

Your mind is so used to being in control and predicting outcomes. For us to truly get present and follow our Soul’s whims one step at a time, means to step into the scary unknown. That place of unknowing, of uncertainty, can feel dark and filled with monsters. We will hold on for dear life and fight tooth and nail not to be thrown off the edge into that scary space!

So the only way in, is to start slow, start gently, hold that compassion for the part of you that’s scared sh**less, celebrate yourself every step of the way, and build trust that when you listen to your intuition, everything will indeed be okay.

TIP: Practice being present and becoming an observer of your thoughts. When fears or judgements come up, acknowledge it without running away, then choose courage – what one step are you willing to take next?

Your True Essence is Needed

For the last many weeks, I have been in shock as to all of the ways people are lashing out in hate and all of the ways the earth has been crying out in pain. I have been feeling lost and sick watching it all happen. I’ve been struggling through the heaviness of it all. And yet… there’s also a fire growing within me. A fire of anger, and strength, and determination. A fire that is calling me into action. To align myself with who I truly am. To stand firmly in what I truly believe. To speak up when something is NOT okay.

Through all this, I’ve been getting more clear on how inner work is intrinsically connected to society, family dynamics, politics, and all that is happening around us. It is all so tightly interwoven. If I am here to support our Souls’ liberation, then I must also be a part of tearing down the systems that keep us locked up. I’m not exactly sure what that looks like for me yet, especially because I have never been an outspoken person, I like to keep to myself in my home, and I never used to pay much attention to politics. But I’ve been really listening these last few months, especially these last few weeks. And what I do know, is that the more firmly we can stand in our own authenticity and what WE believe in, the more others will be able to as well.

Most of us have been taught not to listen to or believe in ourselves, which has made it easy for society to shape us. But no more. We are waking up and we are reclaiming ourselves.

In order for change to happen, we all need to be able to stand firm in who we are and what we believe in. If we are to change anything that is happening out there, we must stop dilly dallying and get to work. And by “get to work” I don’t only mean the actions the world needs from us, but I also mean get to playing, get to living, get to BEing – because that’s how we’re going to be more connected to who we truly are so that the actions we do take are more rooted.

We’ve been relying on our fearful, analytical, perfectionist, controlling brain too much. We have forgotten our Soul, our true essence; which is full of compassion, of knowing (and not knowing), of love, curiosity, courage, and clarity.

I can’t imagine what the world would be like if we were all living from our true essence, using our brain as a helpful tool, rather than letting it rule the show with it’s unconscious patterns that were shaped by society.

It’s time to reconnect with the pieces of ourselves that have been hidden away, and find harmony within. I believe art journaling can be the playful way in which we can begin doing that; but yet I see so many struggling against their mind to even get started. So, to support as many people to get moving on this path as I can, and in celebration of my upcoming class Creative Soul Roots, I’ll be sharing a series of Soul-Truths that will help you get clear on why you’ve been feeling stuck, and inspiration to start trusting in your Creative Soul once more.

If you’ve been yearning to express yourself freely in an art journal, but still feeling stuck, not good enough, not knowing where to start, or just not able to find joy in the process, sign up for this free mini series which starts Monday, Sept 18th.

My hope is that once you let these Soul Truths settle in, you’ll know exactly how to begin and keep moving with joy, courage, and authenticity.

Sorry, the Soul Truths series has now ended. Be sure to sign up for my newsletter below to get notified when I run the series again!

5 Ways to Get out of Your Head & Express Yourself Creatively

5 Ways to Get out of Your Head & Express Yourself Creatively

I'm sure you've felt by now that learning art techniques simply isn't all there is to authentically express yourself creatively. There's something else… something even more important than knowing what colors work well together or how to balance a composition.

If you want to discover your own style, if you want to freely express yourself, if you want to live your best life - then it needs to come from your true self, from your soul. Not from your mind, or your fears, or your habitual thoughts.

So the key to authentic expression, is not to learn new techniques or find the perfect supply… it's to practice shifting out of this left-brain head space, and into your heart space.

The space where your true, infinitely creative, self can take the lead. This is where your soul speaks to you through intuition. This is where you'll hear the truth behind those passing critical thoughts. This is where you'll find your ultimate inspiration. This is where TRUE, authentic expression springs forth.

In my guided e-course, Creative Soul Roots, we spend 6 weeks exploring this space where our soul resides, and practicing the art of being present, noticing and moving past our critical thoughts, and listening to our intuition. We dive deep into this process with creative exercises and emerge with a greater understanding of our internal landscape, a stronger relationship with ourselves, and a journaling practice that will ultimately change the way we live our lives.

If you're ready to get past the struggles and critical thoughts, and into the space of free expression, then I invite you to join us. Our journey begins in just a few short days! CLICK HERE to learn more and sign up.

If now is simply not the right time to dive deep into this process, then that's okay too. I have five simple tips to help you get started right now:

#1. Develop a Ritual - Rituals are a beautiful (and fun!) way to awaken your creative, intuitive side before diving into your journal. By practicing a simple activity with intention like lighting candles, putting on an apron, doing some simple stretches, or simply setting up your space, you're signaling to your brain that it's time to shift gears.

#2. Start with Free-Writing - Sitting down to write freely without censoring yourself is a great way to not only let out all the mind-chatter and junk you have cooped up in that mind, but it's also a great way to awaken your intuition. Once you get out all that heaviness, a clear channel is then opened up for your intuition to come through and start spilling out onto the page.

#3. Move Your Body - Your intuition can only speak to you in the here and now. Body movement can be your ticket to the present moment, as opposed to being stuck in those thoughts of what might happen, or what should happen. Start with a few simple stretches, and/or stand up with your journal on an easel to get your whole body involved in the creating!

#4. Entice Your Senses - Using your senses is another fun way to get yourself in the present moment, where you'll be able to more clearly hear your intuition. Bring in some flowers, drink a glass of wine or a cup of tea, taste some chocolate, focus on the feeling of your brush in your hand, use your fingers to move the paint around, turn up the music, marvel at the colors before you! What else can you use to engage your sense of touch, smell, sight, hearing, and taste?

#5. Invoke Play & Curiosity - If you're stuck in trying to perfect a technique, or create a certain outcome, there's no room for your soul to shine through. Let all of that go, open up to being vulnerable with not knowing, and play with curiosity! Let yourself be a kid again, simply play with the paints. Get curious: "..what happens if I try this?" Surrender your need to predict or control the outcome and explore with what is right here in the present moment.

Practice these, and you'll be sure to open up new doorways of expression!

Much love to you!!

Full Moon Soul Date

The full moon was last weekend. And no, I’m not usually the type that pays much attention to these sorts of things… although perhaps now I will, because what I experienced over these past few days was nothing short of magical.

They say the full moon is a time for releasing that which no longer serves you… and oooh boy, was something telling me to let go! Out of nowhere, I began to get bombarded with messages all telling me the same thing:

It’s time to let go of your old ways of doing things.

It’s time to shed the cocoon and grow.

It all started with some simple nudges from Connie Solera, to take some time to reflect and to speak to the soul of my business because I was really feeling flustered and out of sorts. When I agreed to slow down and really listen… that’s when the messages started to appear.

First, through my daily written journal. Then through a conversation in our Ignite class. A book appeared at my doorstep: Meet Your Soul. An unexpected message from my psychic friend Bridgette who had a feeling that a shift was happening in my biz. An out-of-the-blue free business coaching call. A link to Mystic Mamma where they share that the energetic themes for September is FAITH and TRUST: “The container of our lives needs to be bigger to accommodate this evolution and we cannot hold ourselves back with our fears, limited thinking and need for control.”

(And that’s the short list!)

But what hit me hardest of all, was what I experienced the morning of the full moon. I was feeling tangled. Unsure of what was going on. I needed to run away. So in the early morning light, I grabbed some art supplies and notebooks then snuck away to the beach for some quiet alone time. Little did I know what awaited me…

And through all of these messages, I’ve been getting really clear on some things. A shift IS happening. In my life, as well as in my business. Not a major shift. But more like a re-alignment. You can read more about it HERE where I posted a bit of my thought process through this experience.

But WOW. No words can fully describe what I’ve been experiencing these last few weeks. Big things are coming. I can feel it.

With Love,
