The Secret to {Art Journaling} Happiness

The Secret to Art Journaling Happiness

When I first started art journaling, it was more disappointing than it was fulfilling. I was so focused on trying to make my pages look like other’s I’ve seen, that it left me frustrated when I couldn’t meet my mind’s expectations.

It wasn’t until I was able to put the focus back on myself and start having fun that I was finally able to find happiness in my art journaling practice.

But easier said than done, right?

Throughout my journey (especially in the beginning) I struggled with keeping that focus. But time and time again, there were three important reminders that helped keep me on track. I’m sharing them with you today in hopes that they can be reminders to you as well to guide you into a fulfilling (and happy!) art journaling practice.

Don’t Compare
– Yeah, I say that a lot… but we all need constant reminders. It’s just too easy to get lost on the internet drooling over everyone’s art and feeling not good enough.

But ya know what? Your own true creative voice is just as beautiful.

And striving to be someone else, or to create art exactly like someone you admire, is ignoring that voice. Not only that, but it takes away the pleasure, the excitement of living where you are now. Of enjoying your own journey.

We are all beautifully unique. You and your life and experiences are like none other. This unique perspective on the world should be what drives your voice, your artistic expression. And when we compare? We’re pushing that aside to borrow someone else’s. But no matter how hard you try, you will never be able to duplicate her work, her voice. And if you did? Do you truly think it would be as fulfilling as you’ve come to believe?

I’m not saying that sharing our work with others or admiring what we see is wrong or worthless… it’s what we do with it or how we react that matters.

So go ahead and look and admire. But instead of comparing it to what you create, celebrate it for what it is – a peek into his/her life. And remember that this is what their path looks like, not yours. It doesn’t mean that you are less worthy or that your creations are any less beautiful.

Be Yourself

Embrace & Celebrate Where You Are
– I like to think of life and our creative growth as a continuous journey. And even though our paths may look similar, each path is unique and some of us are further along than others.

But the great thing is, every stage in the journey is a wonderful place to be.

Your journey, especially in the beginning, is full of discoveries to be made, successes to celebrate, mistakes to learn from, and growth to witness. But when we compare ourselves to others, tell ourselves that what we create isn’t good enough, and wish for the day when we can create something “perfect”… we’re missing out on all of that. We’re missing out on our lives.

Your work as a beginner will be raw, messy, and imperfect… but there is so much beauty in that.

Don’t miss out on this wonderful experience you have right in front of you. Embrace being a beginner. Celebrate where you are. Laugh at your mistakes, learn from them, then try again. Revel in the experimentation of it. You’re only at this stage once. Tomorrow, you’ll be further along.

Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle

Choose Your Current Path
– Each day you have a choice: Which creative path do you want to walk? If you don’t choose a goal or focus, you might just find yourself walking in circles; or worse, not even beginning.

You may choose to continue down the path you walked the day before, or start anew. But each day you must choose. What do you want to focus on now? What do you want to practice? What’s your purpose? Is it to express your feelings? Or to perfect your painted faces?

Whatever you choose, follow it with passion and openness. Keep in mind: mess-ups are mandatory. And above all, know that your path can and will evolve at every step you take.

Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.

Embracing your journey (in lieu of someone else’s) and having a sense of where your next step is, will give you the confidence you need to face obstacles along the way. And with this new found confidence and sense of adventure, you’ll find the enjoyment, fulfillment, and happiness you were longing for.

Your journey is like none other.

Your journey is magical.

Your journey…

is yours.

Are you ready to claim it?

Art Journaling Doesn’t Have to be So Hard

We tend to over complicate things… especially when we want to learn something new. We compare our work with others’ masterpieces and quickly feel disillusioned.

Our over-achieving, critical side kicks in, telling us we have to buy the best art materials and write down perfect, inspirational phrases in our journal.

We squash the fun-loving, curious part of ourselves that just wants to create and play with child-like freedom. The part of us that laughs, splashing paint on the page.

Art journaling doesn't have to be so hard

There’s no real need to over-think.

Art journaling can be as simple as giving yourself the freedom to unload your feelings, to fully express yourself.

You don’t need to master the arts to enjoy and benefit from art journaling.

Imagine using your journal as a daily practice of learning to let go.

Imagine releasing the need to compare yourself to others.

Imagine embracing your inner artist and being kind to her, rejoicing in your creative process, without worrying about the end product.

Do it for yourself.

And just begin where you are with what you have today.

Why make it more complicated than that?

I’ve Been Keeping a Secret…

Eeeeek! I’m so excited to spill the beans today! I’ve been keeping this secret for quite some time now…

I’ve been working hard behind the scenes on something that will help you to connect to your true creative self.

So in my new mini workshop Spilling Open, I’ll guide you through an exercise helping you to connect with your true creative self by fully letting go and allowing rich, expressive, and spontaneous moments form. It’s not the paint, techniques, or words we use that make this art journaling practice powerful: It’s our intention of playful self-discovery so that we may spill our hearts openly onto paper with wild abandon and honor ourselves in the process.

This is NOT What Art Journaling is All About…

It’s so easy to get lost in the glamour of the art journaling world, browsing through blogs, watching YouTube videos, flipping through gorgeous magazines, and buying the latest products… that we forget what art journaling is really all about.

This is Not What Art Journaling is About

Art journaling has a deeper purpose. It’s not about the supplies you use or the techniques you learn…

It’s about the connection you make with yourself through the process of journaling.

It’s about growth, trust, and self-compassion.

It’s about exploring and finding your own path.

It’s about opening up for self-exploration.

It’s about believing in yourself.

Are you ready to make that shift in focus and give up comparing your journal pages to others’ so that you may discover your own style?

How Art Journaling Saved My Life {and what it can do for you}

Okay, so maybe claiming that art journaling “saved my life” is a bit of an over statement. Unless you’re like me and consider being a slave to the daily grind day in and day out isn't really living at all. Then you may just understand where this might be going and perhaps are in need of a little saving yourself.

You see, not too long ago I found myself feeling utterly lost.

I felt depressed and empty, almost like a walking ghost.

Feeling Down

But I had everything I could want... a loving family, a supporting husband, and even a successful business selling my primitive art.

As a business owner, I spent my days crafting and creating. People loved my creations; I was featured online, in magazines, and even on TV.

You could say I was living the dream.

Yet, as my business success grew, a part of my spirit began to feel deflated.

After much self-reflection, I realized that while I was creating, I was not creating freely. Art had begun to become a part of my daily grind.

Before my eyes, that which I once cherished had turned into another 9-5 job.

By creating the same items over and over again I was filling the customer demand, but depleting my spiritual supply in the process. I was on auto pilot; not only with my work, but in my personal life as well. I knew I needed to alleviate that suffocation before things fell apart.

So I quit.

I quit my business and embarked on a self discovery journey determined to reclaim myself and find the freedom I so desperately needed.

After a time of aimless wandering, I decided to jump-start the journey with a 30 day challenge which I dubbed “Busy Mom VS Daily Grind”. It was then that I finally delved deeper into art journaling and in time discovered its true gifts.

And that’s when everything turned around.

I started to eagerly anticipate each new day.

I felt alive and more in tune to my surroundings.

I was rediscovering parts of me that I didn't even realize I had lost.

Through art journaling, I was able to unearth my most authentic self. She who had hidden behind the mask of the expected for far too long.

I'm now living a happier more fulfilling life with more clarity and self awareness.

My outlook on life has changed.

I have less stress and can discover my true inner feelings easier.

I'm not caught up with the daily "9-5 rut" anymore; I'm living life with open eyes and creating art I never imagined was within my power.

I've come to see how infusing creativity into our daily lives is therapeutic in so many ways. Once I recognized it in my own life, I became deeply cognizant of it in other people’s lives as well.

I couldn't deny the call.

It’s what has ultimately inspired me to make it my life’s mission to help other women wake up from the slumber of the daily grind. To unearth their creative spirit, discover their authentic voice and embrace their heart's path; allowing them to live happier, more fulfilling lives through expression of creativity.

And I believe it all begins with art journaling. A place where no rules exist; where you can let loose and free your most inner desires, callings, and truth.
