Today was full of surprises and happy mistakes!
I took this photo yesterday, and my challenge for today was to try and create something using it as inspiration.
I decided to work in my art journal for this project, and my first attempt failed when I used a grey that was too dark for the background. But as I kept adding washes of white paint to it, it started to look more and more like a chalkboard. I felt like I just had to leave it as is, and use it as a background for journaling in the future. (Happy mistake #1 for today!)
So I moved on to the next page to try again. My first step was to put a coat of gesso on it. I suddenly realized that I was being a little too messy with it, and the gesso was getting all over my previous “chalkboard” page. I panicked, and flipped the page over to fix the mess. When I got it all fixed up, I then realized that I had closed the page with wet gesso on it! I cringed as I had to peel the pages apart. But as I peeled, my heart calmed and I became excited to see the awesome texture it left behind! (Happy mistake #2 for today!)
I loved the texture so much, I almost wanted to save it for another project. But I talked myself out of that silly nonsense and went ahead with a lighter color grey for my rainbow inspiration. At first, I was really not liking the rainbow I painted on there. I am so not a rainbow and butterfly girl, but I am loving how it all turned out! :)
I plan to add a bit more to it… I’m thinking some journaling in the big open area under the rainbow.
My daughter even joined me in the challenge! She has her own little art journal, and wanted to paint the photo too.
My daughter and I had so much fun with this challenge. Its always fun when a mistake turns to your benefit.
Sometimes mistakes are the most inspiring experiences! :)
